DAVANAGERE: A prisoner from Davanagere sub-jail managed to escape by climbing a 40-foot-high wall on August 25. CCTV footage of the incident was widely shared on social media.
The escapee, a 23-year-old individual named Vasant, who was facing charges of rape, successfully scaled the prison’s compound wall on Saturday afternoon.
Vasant was apprehended on August 26 in Haveri.
Vasant, hailing from Karur on the outskirts of Davanagere city, had a recent case of sexual assault registered against him at Davanagere Women’s Police Station.
Following his arrest by the police, he was confined to Davanagere sub-jail. However, he managed to flee the jail around 3pm on Saturday.
The Basavanagara police from Davanagere city were able to re-arrest him within 24 hours, locating him in Haveri. It’s noted that during his escape attempt, Vasant suffered significant injuries while leaping from the wall.
Footage from the CCTV camera revealed that, despite injuring his leg in the process, Vasant evaded capture and boarded an auto rickshaw in his bid to escape the scene.
Uma Prashanth, the Superintendent of Police in Davanagere, stated that the accused was located and returned to the same jail within the span of 24 hours.
