KOLKATA: A major fire broke out near the passengers’ departure area of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata around 9.10pm on Wednesday.

At least two fire tenders brought the blaze under control in an hour. No one was hurt in the incident with timely evacuation of passengers and shopkeepers..

According to the Kolkata airport’s official statement a minor fire broke our in the check-in area portal D at 9.12pm and it was fully extinguished by 9.40 pm. “All passengers were evacuated safely and the check-in process was suspended due to presence of smoke in the area. Check-in and operation was resumed at 10.15 pm.”
News agency PTI quoted a police officer saying that the airport authorities took no chance and used their firefighters to douse it since there was a rush of passengers. “At the moment, the cooling process is on.”
Officials said an initial investigation found short circuit to be the reason for the fire.
